Program Overview
The Adaptive Kayaking Program, in collaboration with STAR, provides an inclusive recreational opportunity for individuals of all abilities every Sunday afternoon throughout the summer on Lake Neshonoc in West Salem, Wisconsin. The lake’s calm waters and minimal boat traffic offer a safe and welcoming environment for participants. Specially adapted kayaks—with added side supports and accessibility features—allow individuals with limited mobility or other challenges to enter, exit, and paddle comfortably and confidently.
This program is designed to accommodate a wide range of needs, including but not limited to spinal cord injuries, amputations, spina bifida, visual impairment, strokes, muscular dystrophy, shoulder problems, and cognitive challenges. The only requirements are the ability to hold up one’s head, maintain airway control, perform a back float with a life preserver, fit comfortably in the kayak, and be within the 300 lb. weight limit.
Safety is a top priority, and trained volunteers are present to assist participants and families. All necessary safety equipment is provided, and families are encouraged to join, with extra solo and tandem kayaks often available. Advance reservations are required for participation, and the program will be canceled in the event of unsafe weather conditions. Cancellation information is available by calling the Star Center Hotline at 608-305-4601 an hour before the event.
Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, wearing shorts, a t-shirt, tennis shoes or stable sandals, and consider sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, or sweatshirts as needed.
