Adaptive Kayaking for All Abilities

The n.a.s.a. Adaptive Kayaking Program, in partnership with the STAR Center, provides individuals of all abilities the opportunity to experience the freedom, independence, and excitement of kayaking in a safe and supportive environment.

Held on the calm waters of Lake Neshonoc in West Salem, Wisconsin, this program allows participants to enjoy the outdoors while building confidence, creating memories, and sharing time with family, friends, volunteers, and fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

Whether you’re trying kayaking for the first time or returning to a favorite activity, we’re here to help make it possible.

In Partnership with STAR

The Adaptive Kayaking Program is made possible through a partnership between n.a.s.a. and the STAR Center.

Together, we provide adaptive equipment, trained volunteers, and a welcoming environment where individuals of all abilities can enjoy the freedom of being on the water.

Through the generous support of n.a.s.a., participants can enjoy adaptive kayaking completely free of charge.

 

What to Expect

Every Sunday afternoon throughout the summer, participants enjoy kayaking on the calm, protected waters of Lake Neshonoc.

The experience includes:

  • Adaptive kayaks with specialized supports
  • Adaptive modifications for individuals with limited grip strength
  • Life jackets and safety gear
  • Trained volunteers and assistance
  • Family-friendly participation opportunities
  • Solo and tandem kayak options
  • A welcoming and supportive environment

Participants progress at their own pace, and volunteers are available to assist every step of the way.

 

Who Can Participate?

The program is open to youth and adults who have physical, cognitive, sensory, or neurological challenges that make participation in traditional recreation difficult.

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Spina bifida
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Amputations
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke recovery
  • Balance or mobility limitations
  • Blindness or visual impairments
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Down syndrome
  • Cognitive disabilities
  • Other congenital or neurological conditions

Veterans, seniors, and individuals using wheelchairs or other mobility devices are welcome.

 

Safety Requirements

Participants must be able to:

  • Hold their head upright independently
  • Maintain airway control
  • Perform a back float while wearing a life jacket
  • Fit safely within the kayak
  • Be within the 300-pound weight limit

Our goal is to make kayaking accessible while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Weather Policy

Participant safety is our highest priority.

Kayaking sessions may be canceled due to unsafe weather conditions.

What Should I Bring?

Participants should dress for the weather and water conditions.

Recommended items include:

  • Comfortable clothing that can get wet
  • Water shoes, tennis shoes, or secure sandals
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses or hat
  • Bug spray

Parents, caregivers, family members, and friends are encouraged to attend and support participants.

 

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers play a critical role in making adaptive kayaking possible.

Opportunities include:

  • Assisting participants entering and exiting kayaks
  • Launching and retrieving kayaks
  • Equipment setup and transportation
  • Water safety support
  • Encouraging participants and families

Like all n.a.s.a. programs, this experience is made possible entirely by volunteers who donate their time because they believe everyone deserves access to the outdoors.
