Program Overview

Pontoon Fishing Program

The Pontoon Fishing Program provides accessible fishing excursions on the S.S. Squirrel, a fully equipped pontoon boat operating on Lake Onalaska and the Mississippi River backwaters. Available Monday through Friday from June to August, the program welcomes individuals with disabilities, veterans, seniors, youth groups, and community organizations. All necessary equipment, bait, gas, and a trained captain are provided at no cost, thanks to generous sponsors like Kwik Trip. The S.S. Squirrel accommodates up to nine passengers, including space for two wheelchairs, and is designed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Reservations open May 1st. Trips are limited to one or two hours, with bookings required at least 30 days in advance. The boat is wheelchair accessible and features a canopy, Roll-A-Ramp, and life vests.

Ice Fishing Program

The Ice Fishing Program features a heated, accessible ice fishing shack on Lake Onalaska, welcoming seniors, youth, and people with disabilities for winter fishing adventures. The program provides all gear, bait, and transportation at no cost, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience regardless of ability. Volunteers are available to assist with setup and support throughout the event. This is currently maintained by Chad Knapmiller at Shaffer’s Boat Landing and he bills n.a.s.a. for any associated fees.

Pier Fishing Program

The Pier Fishing Program provides accessible fishing from wheelchair-friendly piers equipped with benches and pole holders at locations such as Lake Onalaska, Lake Neshonoc, Vets Park, and Trempealeau. Designed to accommodate participants of all abilities, the program ensures everyone can enjoy fishing in a welcoming and safe environment. All equipment and bait are supplied at no cost, and volunteers are present to assist as needed.
